Urban Fantasy vs. Cozy Paranormal Mystery
The “Why Choose” angle
I’ve always loved both science fiction and fantasy, but when I started writing my own stories, fantasy is where I landed.
Not just one kind of fantasy—all of it.
I love mysteries, romance, high stakes, and heroines with plenty of sass. And I still love the idea of space travel, even if I’m never going to be a rocket scientist. The result? Stories across multiple subgenres—and more than one pen name.
Same Magic, Different Experience
Two of those subgenres—urban fantasy and cozy paranormal mystery—might look similar on the surface. Both are set in the modern world. Both involve magic. Both often feature witches.
But the experience of reading them? Completely different.
Urban Fantasy: Hidden Worlds and High Stakes
Urban fantasy builds a world of hidden magic, often with structured rules, layered supernatural politics, and stakes that can threaten an entire city—or even the world.
Cozy Paranormal Mystery: Intimate Magic and Personal Stakes
Cozy paranormal mysteries take a more intimate approach. Magic is often more visible (or at least more accepted), the setting is smaller, and the focus stays personal. The rules are lighter, the power structures simpler, and the stakes usually center on solving a single crime rather than stopping a global catastrophe.
The Questions Each Genre Asks
Maybe the biggest difference lies in the questions these stories ask.
Urban fantasy asks: What hidden power shapes the world beneath the surface?
Cozy paranormal mystery asks: What would it be like to live in a magical world?
Two Very Different Kinds of Magic
Urban fantasy builds worlds you fight to survive.
Cozy paranormal mystery builds worlds you can settle into.
